Kathy Bean - How My Mother Taught Me the Most Important Lesson of My Life
- By Kathy M. Bean
Like many children, I grew up very close to my family members, and have been blessed all my life. I learned incredible work ethics and values from both my parents that have stayed with me all my life. But perhaps the most valuable lesson came from my mother, who I'm sure has earned a special spot in Heaven for "near-Saints" and mothers with phenomenal patience and knowledge! As a young girl, I seemed to be prone to minor eye infections, and my Mom would loan me her 14K gold wedding band to rub on it, healing it overnight, every time!! (Gold is a great healer, and has been touted in many medi- cal arenas, including gold shots in the abdomen for cancer treat- ments!) … One day, several of us were enjoying the beautiful Florida sun- shine and weather out on the pier of Barefoot Bay, in Florida, and especially enjoying the increas- ing number of curious and hungry pelicans. We had a bit of bread with us, and decided to tear it into a few pieces and share with the birds! Oh what a joy! The birds dove to catch the little morsels and we delighted in every one of them! It was a perfect day! That is…. until "it" happened!….. I had borrowed my Mom's gold wedding band that day and was rubbing it gently on my eye occasionally as I'd always done, and put it back on my finger as always. However, it was a little large for me, and with one joy- ful throw of my arm and hand with some bread sailing into the air ….. there went the wedding band, sailing off my finger into the Indian River for posterity!! I was devastated!!! How could I have done that?!? That was my Mother's wedding ring!!! I couldn't have felt any worse at that hopeless moment and tears began streaming down my face, and the horror of it settled in like an anchor! There was no way to retrieve it, and I was inconsolable. However, with the lifelong strength, wisdom, and gentleness she's always shared, she calmly held me, whispering, "It's okay, Honey. It's only a ring! … It's just a material thing and can be replaced, but you can't!" …. "It's just a ring!" … The words softened the overwhelming feelings, but I didn't think I could ever forgive myself. Yet she already had!! …. Life went on and time has a way of enriching the seeds that are lovingly planted in our hearts. I had vowed to myself that day, that I would somehow replace that ring!! Money was beyond tight, but I was determined to keep that promise! Mom didn't care about having another ring, but I did! And not just any ring! It had to be just as close to the one I lost in the river as I could possibly find! Time passed, and at last I was able to save enough to buy another ring that was 'perfect!' I found it in a pawn shop at the time when Gold was at a very high price, but that didn't matter. It was just like her ring!! So…. I was so proud! I found it! I kept my promise! I could replace her ring! Well…. I gave her the ring with all the love my heart could hold, and she was happy, but…… more than that, she reminded me how blessed she was that I was her daughter. NOT because of the ring, but because of the love that went into trying to replace it. After all, she said, "It was just a ring! Just a material thing… and material things can be replaced. But the love is what matters, and as long as you hold that love in your heart, you can get through anything. Never lose the love. Never lose the joy. The rest is all replaceable." And that wisdom has carried us our entire lives. It's been tested with the loss of her mobile home at the age of 81 from two back-to-back hurricanes, but again, we had each other; And my husband and I welcomed her into our home, as she waited for a new replacement home, and salvaged what could be from the destroyed home. But the love and the memories carried us through. After all….. it was 'just a house'…. And could be replaced. And we were all safe. A home is made with love, and other things are wonderful, but you really don't "need them." So whenever something is lost, broken, damaged, and seems irreplaceable….. I remember those words….. "It's just a thing…. It can be replaced." …. And I hold on and get through whatever the challenge might be! I will always thank my Mom for instilling in me the important lesson for keeping my priorities straight. At 91 she continues to inspire me with her strength and wisdom, and incredible determination! My mother, Betty J. Meyers, will always be an inspiration to those whose lives she touches! I love you, Mom. Thank you for being my Mother, my Mentor, and My Best Friend!
